Parakeet

This project was born from a work hackathon in December 2019. After some initial progress that night, I took on the project and built it out to the current state. The idea was to create a unique way to experience music with people around you. By combining music listening habits, geolocation data, and filtering by arbitrary groups, Parakeet aimed to provide a new way of engagement and social interaction, even for those of us who prefer a more solitary musical experience.

Parakeet is a web application built primarily with

  • Firebase for the authentication, hosting, and database
  • React for the frontend development
  • Spotify as the music streaming platform
  • Mapbox for the visualizing the map of nearby users

  • Spotify-enabled web music player with basic controls
  • Group management to create or join different groups of users
  • Trending list generated from the user's current group
  • Trending list for specific location regions within the user's current group
  • Map showing nearby users, showing what they are listening to, and a method to listen to the same track
